A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE ARTIST

1. What do you do when you’re not making art? (Day job etc...).

I’m a Professor of Art at Knox College.

2. Why do you make art?

To stay sane, to feel alive, to be connected to myself, to the elemental and physical experience with the world and with nature, to be connected to what challenges me the most in life – painting: emotively, intellectually and materially.

3. What inspires you?

Being out in the natural world where I am challenged to urgently interpret and translate the overwhelmingly sensate diversity in nature; seeing the work of artists who move me and reading fiction by writers who move me.

4. What/who are your influences?

Demanding, rugged, rocky, mountainous terrain, sharp light; El Greco, Rembrandt, Courbet, Soutine, Sillman, Joan Brown, Matisse, Masaccio, De Kooning, Kossoff, Auerbach, Rouault, Stanley Lewis, Nick Carone, Rock Paintings, David Park, Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner.

5. If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would it be?

Lee Krasner, Jung and Virginia Woolf.
